In March, we were only days away from a big launch party at the Mondrian Hotel, where we were set to share our plans for the future. But COVID caused the cancellation of all events, including our popular speed dating and singles events.

Catch has been monitoring the developments surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic with great concern. Federal, state, and local health authorities are in agreement that slowing down the rate of transmission is of key importance. The aim is to prevent a breaking point at which our health care system becomes too overloaded to deal with those cases who develop life-threatening complications.

Our expertise as event organizers and matchmakers is in bringing people together. It is very rewarding for us to see people connect in-person and potentially find a life partner. But, we also believe that we have an important role to play in protecting our community at large. Therefore, we have decided that it has become necessary to postpone all public groups events, effective immediately. This is a temporary measure and we look forward to rescheduling our Catch Speed Dating events as soon as the situation allows.

In in the meantime, we are working on ways to shift to online activities. More details will be announced in our email newsletters. If you haven’t already, please subscribe!

If you have purchased a ticket for an upcoming Catch Speed Dating event, you will be issued a refund. This will be processed through the ticket vendor (Eventbrite), so please allow time for their processing.

We appreciate your understanding and loyalty during this crisis and look forward to welcoming you back to our Catch Speed Dating events as soon as possible.

In the meantime, our team will be developing new ways to help our dating community continue to connect on a personal level. We recognize that this is a very challenging and potentially lonely time for many people. Trust that we are very inspired to help everyone make the best of it!

One of the most important things we all need to do is maintain our physical and mental fitness – even if we are forced to stay at home.

Catch Matchmaking is supporting the Community Karate Foundation, a 501(c)3 charity. Together, we will be producing a guided workout program everyone can do at home. It is designed to strengthen both body and spirit, and we are aiming to make it available as a public service, for free. More details will be available soon. If you would like to aid this response to COVID-19, please consider making a tax deductible donation here.

We wish you health and wellness during these trying times. We ask you to please study and follow the recommendations of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones.

Catch Speed Dating is a type of singles events in which you get to meet 10 – 15 singles of the opposite sex. Spending just a few minutes with each of them, you’ll easily find out if you’d like to go on a real date with that person. It’s efficient. It’s fast. It’s fun.

Catch Matchmaking has been organizing these kinds of events for 10 years, and we’ve developed a special formula to make them successful. Each event is hosted by an experienced, professional matchmaker who will guide you through the process.

In recent years, we held our events at the Warehouse in Marina Del Rey. But for our 10-year anniversary, we’ll be mixing things up. Do you like food as much as we do?

For our Catch Speed Dating event on Saturday March 21, we have picked a new venue for all of us to enjoy. Fifty One Chinese Kitchen is a stylish Asian fusion restaurant established to bring a modern twist on authentic Chinese cuisine to the West. The owners are from Hong Kong and pride themselves in making family recipes in-house. For our event, they will be offering a special menu of dim sum and other bite-sized items, and the bar will extend special pricing to our group.

We hope that this will make the event more fun and social. Please join us promptly at the announced start time for each event to start mingling and enjoying refreshments!

Jerrod Carmichael’s directorial debut plays to his strengths. The filmmaker is best known for his ability to find humor in the darkest of subjects, and in On The Count of Three he mines pitch-black laughs out of two depressed friends with a suicide pact.

Carmichael plays Val, who ostensibly has his life together but cannot bear the thought of living it. Having decided to end it all, he springs his best friend Kevin (Christopher Abbott) out of a mental institution where he is recovering following his most recent suicide attempt. Their reasons for killing themselves are different but there is a tender sweetness in their decision to go out together.

Carmichael is excellent at doing exactly what he does best: restrained monotone humor that expresses deep sensitivity. Christopher Abbot is a revelation playing a tragic loser who feels plucked from Safdie Brothers movie – complete with a terrible blonde dye job. Abbot leans into his comic abilities we’ve seen hints of in Catch 22, Girls, and Black Bear, and delivers hilarious lines, matching and at times even surpassing Carmichael’s comic chops.

While the jokes about Papa Roach and the 2nd amendment elicit laughs, On The Count of Three is a dark film and not glib about its subject matter. These characters are in a profound amount of pain and the only way out is bleak and permanent. The world these men inhabit is cruel and remorseless and made to feel grimmer still by casting J.B. Smoove and Henry Winkler against type as abusive men. This film is not one you’ll walk away from happy but it is one that finds such tenderness and humor in desolation, it’s impossible to not be impressed.
